Why Would Pallet Racking Need a Permit?
Do You Need a Permit for Pallet Racking?
When businesses start planning a new pallet racking system, most of the focus is usually on the rack size, storage capacity, layout, and installation.
Permitting is often the last thing anyone thinks about.
Then, right before installation begins, someone asks:
“Do we need a permit for this?”
The honest answer is that it depends.
Permit requirements can be different depending on the city, building, height of the racking, type of products being stored, and local fire and building codes. That is why it is important to ask about permitting early instead of waiting until the installation is already scheduled.
Pallet racking may look like equipment that can simply be assembled inside a warehouse, but larger systems can affect several parts of the building.
The local building or fire department may want to review things such as:
• The height of the pallet racking
• The total size of the storage area
• The weight the system will support
• Aisle widths and emergency access
• Exit paths
• Sprinkler clearance
• The type of products being stored
• How the racking will be anchored
• The warehouse ceiling height
Some projects may also require drawings or calculations prepared by a licensed professional engineer.
This does not mean every pallet racking project will need the same documents. A few short sections of racking may be handled differently than a large system that is twenty or thirty feet tall.

Who Is Responsible for Checking?
The building owner or tenant should contact the local municipality, building department, or fire department to confirm what is required for the property.
The pallet racking supplier can provide important information about the system, but the local authorities are the ones who decide whether a permit is required and what documents must be submitted.
This is especially important because two warehouses located in different cities may have completely different requirements, even when the pallet racking systems are almost identical.
If you are leasing the building, it is also a good idea to speak with the property owner or property manager before moving forward. Some landlords have their own approval process for warehouse improvements.
What Documents Might Be Requested?
Depending on the project, the local authorities may ask for:
• A warehouse floor plan
• A pallet racking layout
• Rack dimensions
• Beam and upright specifications
• Load capacity information
• Anchoring details
• Product or commodity information
• Sprinkler information
• Professionally stamped drawings
It is always better to find out what is needed before ordering materials or choosing an installation date.
Waiting until the last minute can lead to delays, additional expenses, or changes to the original warehouse layout.
Do Not Assume You Are Automatically Covered
One common misunderstanding is assuming that the company selling or installing the pallet racking will automatically handle the permitting process.
That is not always the case.
Unless permitting, engineering, or architectural services are specifically listed in the proposal, they may not be included in the project price.
Before approving a quote, ask what is included and what will still be your responsibility. A clear conversation in the beginning can prevent confusion once the project starts.
Plan Ahead and Avoid Delays
Permitting does not have to make your pallet racking project complicated.
The best thing you can do is contact your local building or fire department early, explain what you are planning, and ask what they need from you.
Once you know the requirements, your pallet racking supplier can help provide the available system specifications and other information needed for your project.
At Herdzco Industrial, we help businesses plan pallet racking systems based on their warehouse space, storage needs, and daily operations. We can also help gather available product information and discuss additional drawing or permitting assistance when requested.
