What Is Pallet Racking? A Simple Guide for Warehouse Owners
If you have ever walked into a warehouse, you have probably seen tall metal racks holding pallets of inventory. That is pallet racking.
Pallet racking is one of the most common ways businesses store products in a warehouse. It helps keep inventory organized, gets products off the floor, and allows businesses to use more of the height in their building.
It may look simple, but there are a few things you should know before deciding whether pallet racking is right for your space.
How Does Pallet Racking Work?
A basic pallet rack system is made up of upright frames and horizontal beams.
The upright frames create the sides of each section. The beams connect the frames and hold the pallets. Many systems also have wire decking placed across the beams for extra support.
A forklift or reach truck is normally used to place pallets onto the rack and remove them when needed.
One nice thing about pallet racking is that the beam levels can usually be adjusted. This makes it easier to create more or less space between each level depending on what you are storing.
What Is Pallet Racking Used For?
Pallet racking is mostly used for inventory that is stored on pallets.
You may see it used for boxed products, building materials, automotive parts, food and beverage products, manufacturing supplies, and e-commerce inventory.
Instead of spreading everything across the warehouse floor, pallet racking allows you to store inventory on multiple levels. This can help create more room without having to move into a larger building.
What Are the Main Parts?
Every pallet rack system can look a little different, but most include the same basic parts.
Upright Frames
The upright frames are the tall vertical sides of the rack. They help determine the height and depth of the system.

Beams
The beams connect the upright frames and support the pallets. They come in different lengths, sizes, and weight capacities.

Wire Decking
Wire decking sits across the beams and creates a more complete storage surface. It can be helpful when storing smaller pallets, boxes, or loose products.

Safety Clips
Safety clips help keep the beams connected to the upright frames.

Anchors
Anchors secure the upright frames to the concrete floor and help keep the rack stable.

Depending on the setup, a system may also include pallet supports, row spacers, column protectors, guardrails, and other accessories.
Why Do Warehouses Use Pallet Racking?
The biggest reason is space.
Warehouse floor space can fill up quickly. Pallet racking helps you store products vertically instead of keeping everything on the ground.
It can also make inventory easier to organize and find. When the layout is planned correctly, employees can move through the warehouse more easily and spend less time looking for products.
Pallet racking can also grow with your business. In some cases, beam levels can be moved or additional sections can be added as your storage needs change.
Is Pallet Racking the Same as Industrial Shelving?
No. They are used for different types of inventory.
Pallet racking is usually used for heavier products stored on pallets and moved with a forklift.
Industrial shelving is normally used for smaller boxes, tools, parts, and supplies that employees pick by hand.
Many warehouses use both. Pallet racking can hold full pallets, while industrial shelving keeps smaller items organized and easy to reach.
What Should You Know Before Buying Pallet Racking?
Before purchasing anything, you should know the size and weight of your pallets, your ceiling height, your available floor space, and the type of forklift you use.
You should also think about how many pallets you need to store, how high your forklift can reach, and how much aisle space it needs to move safely.
When buying used pallet racking, always check for bent frames, damaged beams, missing safety clips, rust, or signs of forklift impact.
It is also important to remember that not all pallet rack parts are interchangeable. Two beams may look similar but may not fit the same type of upright.
